Following Caryn's brilliant post on Cultivating Dreams (I suggest you check it out before continuing; link is attached below), I thought it apt to build on it with a thought it provoked.
I can not help but think that following your dreams requires courage and bravery; especially if it is God's dream for your life as well.
You see, dreams are a only hopeful vision for the future, but until we decide to act on them in faith, courage and bravery; that is all they will ever be.
To follow God requires bravery and courage, and often times these two things are very difficult to muster within ourselves and require that we seek God to give them to us.
In Jeremiah 1, we see that this great prophet (whom we love to quote so much), receives a call from God with words such as "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations" vs 5 ESV. This man is called to do such great things, but yet God intentionally speaks directly to his fears and strengthens him even before He sends him out to do the great things He has foretold.
God gives Jeremiah the assurance that He would be with and deliver him, and says to him; "...Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them. And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the LORD, to deliver you." vs 17-19 ESV.
The likelihood is that you too will face opposition in the pursuit of your dream. Because here we see that this prophet sent on this enormous mission by a great and big God still faces considerable opposition in fulfilling the call of God in his life. But God gives him bravery; He fortifies him and equips him with the very things he needs to be all that he is called to be; strength and courage.
It is my guess that you probably need these things too because your dreams, whether your own or the ones God has for you, will require a level of preparedness for the challenges that lie ahead; because nothing good worth doing ever comes easy.
Our dreams will never be fulfilled if we are not equipped for the birthing pains that are pre-requisite to the fulfillment of our dreams and calls on our lives. Because we first need to step out in faith, and then put on courage and bravery to sustain us during the journey.
So will you put on bravery and courage? But more importantly will you ask God to give these to you?
"But the LORD said to me, 'Do not say, 'I am only a youth''; for to all whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the LORD." Jeremiah 1:8-9
