Today is so lovely and rainy, a good reminder to take it slow.
"Hurry involves excessive haste or a state or urgency. It is associated with words such as hurl, hurdle, hurly-burly(meaning "uproar"), and hurricane. A state of frantic effort one falls into in response to inadequacy, fear, and guilt."- An excerpt from the book 'The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry' by John Mark Comer.
Being afraid of doing nothing...think about that for a minute. Aren't some of our worst moments when we are hurried?
We tend to be shorter with ourselves and others when we are hurried. We become more frustrated than normal when the person driving in front of us is driving like it's a Sunday morning.
Who are we becoming by being hurried?
Who are we becoming by hurrying God?
Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
We can't learn well if we are hurriedly listening or working. Jesus says "learn from me", and He came to earth to show us just that. Jesus got hungry and thirsty and tired, He wasn't trying to be every thing to everyone, everywhere. His real work only started when He was 30 years old.
But here we are stressed that if we take a break our entire world will fall apart. People at work will think we are lazy. Friends will think we've gone loopy for seeing a therapist. The church will stop churching if the pastor goes on leave for longer than a week.
Change is not easy, it never has been and probably never will be. But we all want it and I'm certain that many of you reading this have a dull ache somewhere inside of you to have a change that will transform your ache and put life into focus.
John Ortberg knew Dallas Willard (a profound American philosopher) quite well and once asked him "What do I need to do to become the me I want to be?" To which Willard replied, "Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day. You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life."
Pay attention to how you reply to the question "How are you?", you might just find yourself adding the word 'busy' in there more often than you think.
Let's try slow down this week, replenish, and not be afraid to do so.
